Soul Curry
I can smile through pain

Sunaina Roshan talks about her battle with cancer, a bad marriage and her brother Hrithik, who has seen her through it all

TIMES NEWS NETWORK:
WHEN Im asked what keeps me smiling, I say, I am a tough girl, I am a fighter. Time is the best healer. Today, I am going through the happiest phase in my life. My family is what matters the most. I married at the age of 20. I was young and nave , and for eight years, I tried hard to save my marriage but even God couldnt have saved it.
I walked out of it due to irreconcilable differences with my husband and came back to my parents, hoping to get over the failed marriage but what followed were a series of illnesses. I weighed 103 kg as I ate everything in sight to cope with depression.
I lost 45 kg but was soon infected by tuberculosis meningitis. I was in semi-coma for two days and doctors werent sure of my recovery. I was hospitalised for almost a month. When I got out, I immersed myself in work. When all seemed well, I had to face another major setback. I was assisting Dad (Rakesh Roshan) on Krazzy 4 when I was diagnosed with cervical cancer . I went through six sessions of chemotherapy in six months.
Duggu (Hrithik) ensured that I got the best treatment. I considered my hair my biggest asset but had to shave it due to chemo. I learnt to let go. I would wake up, wear lipstick, get ready and look forward to the session.
My next blow was the worst. My 13-year-old daughter told me that she wanted to live with her father. My illnesses left me with little time for us to be together and that is my biggest regret. Her happiness meant the world to me and I let her go. I was shattered and at my all-time low.
Hrithik would come to me and say, Didi, this is not you. You are a fighter . Get up. My dad told me, Tough times dont last, but tough people do. There used to be a time when I wouldnt shed a tear no matter how sad I would be. Today, I cry even when I am happy. I cry when I see my family, Hrithik, Suzanne loving me endlessly. I am back on the film sets with my brother and father . I sit in the hot sun without an umbrella for hours and realise the value of money much more than I used to. Ill be 38 years old next week. I have been battling with life since I was 20. I felt God was unkind to me but not anymore. Whatever has to happen will happen. Looking back, I thank God for even giving me those illnesses as they only made me stronger. My perception of pain has changed. Today, I can get surgery done all by myself. I have three permanent tattoos on my body. When someone asks me if that hurts, I just smile. Every setback has made me a better person, taught me to face life with confidence. I am a follower of Amma Bhagwaan in Chennai, who has given me the peace that I needed. My hair is growing back. Those who dont know me may think I am a rich brat but I want to tell them, Hrithik, Suzanne and my parents have spoilt me, not with comforts, but with love. Hrithik tells me, Didi, you deserve to be happy.

Drop the idea of Becoming : )

December 17, 2009
The first thing to be understood is that becoming is driving you crazy. You are not to become anything, you are already that. You have to accept yourself and relax in that acceptance. The person who is trying to become something is bound to remain tense, naturally: the constant fear of whether he is going to make it or not, the constant fear of whether what he is doing is going to lead him to the goal or not, whether he has chosen the right path or not, the constant fear of whether he is doing enough to achieve or not, the constant fear that there are others who may reach before him.
Becoming creates fear, becoming creates competition, and becoming drives you crazy, neurotic.Becoming takes you farther and farther away from your being. Do not become… be, just be. Becoming is the root cause of all confusion, misery and anguish – confusion because in fact you cannot become that which you are not. The rose can try as much as possible, but it is going to remain a rose, it can’t become a lotus. The lotus can try hard, can practise all kinds of yoga exercises, but the lotus is going to remain a lotus, it can’t become a rose. A rose is a rose and a lotus is a lotus. But the lotus is beautiful and the rose is beautiful and there is NO confusion, because the rose is perfectly happy in being a rose and the lotus is perfectly happy in being a lotus. Only man is miserable. The only being who is miserable on the earth is man, because he is not happy in being himself; he wants to become something else. We have been brought up with this poison: ”Become!” We have been driven by the society, by the church, by the parents, by the teachers: ”Become!” Nobody says to us: ”Be!” And if you can find a person who says to you, ”Be!” that is the person to listen to, that is the real Master, because he is giving you the most fundamental thing. Through that vision you will be able to relax, and in relaxation there is clarity.Confusion arises out of the idea of becoming because you become a duality – that which you are and that which you would like to be. You become a duality and a great tension, and you have to deny your reality and you have to impose the unreal upon yourself. You become phony, you become pseudo, you become split. And what I am saying is not theoretical; you can look all around – the whole humanity is split because everybody is trying to become somebody else. Somebody is trying to become a Christ, somebody else is trying to become a Buddha, somebody else is trying to become the richest man in the world, somebody is trying to become the president of a country, but becoming… in the name of religion also, becoming.
Then what is the difference between religion and the ordinary worldly affairs? If the worldly man is trying to become the richest man or the most powerful man, and the religious man also is trying to become somebody – a Buddha, a Krishna – then where is the difference? Both are in the same boat; the name of the boat is becoming.

The truly religious person is one who drops out of the whole trip of becoming, who relaxes in his being, who rejoices in his being, who says, ”I am that” – AHAM BRAHMASMI – ”I am already that”; ANA’L HAQ – ”I am truth, I am God.” These are just expressions of being. The basic message is: ”I am already that, so I need not try to become.”

I have heard one of the most beautiful stories about a Hassid Master, Sosya. About seven hundred years ago a great Master and mystic named Sosya, ripe with years and honors, lay dying. His students and disciples asked if he was afraid to die. ”Yes,” he said. ”I am afraid to meet my maker.” ”How can that be? You have lived such an exemplary life. You have led us out of the wilderness of ignorance like Moses. You have judged between us wisely, like Solomon.”

Sosya replied, ”When I meet my maker, He will not ask, ’Have you been Moses or Solomon?’ He will ask, ’Have you been Sosya?’” This is one of the most beautiful stories; meditate over it. Sosya says: ”God will not ask me, ’Have you been Moses or Solomon?’ He will ask me, ’Have you been Sosya?’”And remember, God is going to ask you the same thing. He will not ask you, ”Have you been Jesus or Buddha or Kabir?” He will simply ask you, ”Have you been yourself?” – and that is not happening, not to millions of people. They are all trying to be somebody else, something else; rejecting their beings they go on rushing towards some idea of becoming. They remain in confusion because they remain in duality, and they remain in misery because it is not possible; they are trying the impossible.
Remember, misery arises only when you try the impossible, because it can’t happen in the nature of things and you want it to happen. You want two plus two to be five: you will be miserable unless you see the point that two plus two CANNOT be five. You may even believe for a few moments that they are five, but sooner or later the truth will reveal itself – they are four. How long can you deceive, and what is the point of deceiving? You are simply wasting your life.

Don’t try the impossible – and becoming is trying the impossible. You cannot be anybody other than you are; let this idea sink deep into your heart. Let me repeat: you cannot be anybody other than you are, there is no becoming. All becoming is the world. Not to be a part of becoming is to be a sannyasin.

Who is a sannyasin? – one who is no more worried about becoming somebody because he is absolutely attuned with his being, he knows who he is and he is happy in being that; one who is grateful in being that. Misery comes whenever you try the impossible, so whenever you are miserable remember: you must be trying something impossible.

Bliss is an outcome of simply being the natural. Bliss is not an achievement, it is a by-product of relaxing with yourself, of simply being that which you are. Then THIS very moment all misery can disappear, and THIS very moment there is bliss, and THIS very moment there is benediction… and the heavens open up and God starts showering. And suddenly, a great stirring is felt in the heart: one who has been asleep becomes awake.

Remember to pause, don’t rush through life!

December 7, 2009

Sister Shivani, from the Brahmakumari practice, draws from her connect with God. She explains, “For me, spirituality is not a search for God, it’s when the relationship has begun. Spirituality is charging of the battery (soul), but for that I need to be connected to the Power House — God.”

As one evolves spiritually, it leads to an understanding that you already have within you what you seek from others — love, happiness, peace. Says Shivani, “You are then free to act and interact without any ‘agenda’ and to be yourself. You will be at peace with yourself because there is no longer any conflict between the many identities that you had previously created—gender/nationality/profession/possessions, etc. You will contain the world instead of it containing you.” Emotional literacy helps us realise that the cause of our feelings is not external events but the self.

How does one achieve a more spiritual self? Remember to pause, don’t rush through life! Experts recommend meditation and learning to make more intelligent choices, an ability to disengage from the world outside and your own thoughts for a deeper understanding of oneself, taking 10 minutes daily for self-introspection. It’s ultimately all about the self!

FOOD : )

November 19, 2009

RELISH YOUR FOOD : )……………Have you seen poor people who live under flyovers? They manages to get some food (like boiled rice, dry rotis etc.) but when you see them having food, you will notice they relish their food, seeing them having food even your mouth starts watering. Remember when you are really hungry only then you can enjoy your food. If you are not hungry even the best of delicious food cannot give you happiness.

                                          — Smt. Jaya Row

Prayer before taking food: Heavenly Father, receive this food. Make it holy. Let no impurity of greed ever defile it. The food comes from Thee. It is to build Thy temple. Spiritualize it. Spirit to Spirit goes. We are the petals of Thy manifestation, but Thou art the Flower, its life, beauty and loveliness. Permeate our souls with the fragrance of Thy presence.

                                       — Paramhansa Yogananda : )

“IF YOU DONT GET FOOD FOR A DAY , THEN IT IS NOT A BIG LOSS, BUT IF FOR A DAY, YOU DO NOT GET SATSANG AND MEDITATION, THEN SURELY ITS A BIG LOSS”

‘Eat and drink in peace, why do you rush through your meals?’

                                                                                      –way of living : )

People think, “If everybody had food, then we would have peace.” Excuse me. Who creates food? Do people create food? No. We can sow the seeds. Nature does the work. Nature grows the trees and the fruit. Is nature partial to what language you speak? Is nature partial to any of the divisions that we have created? No. Can the people of this world be fed? Yes. What does it take? Kindness.

There is a saying: “If you are strong, you should be kind. If you are smart, you should be simple. If you are wealthy, you should be humble.” I agree. The kindness that needs to exist is in the heart of people, but skepticism hides that kindness.

                                                     —– Maharaji : )

Some say, “Eliminate the hunger in this world, and there will be peace.” Listen, there are people who purposely go hungry trying to lose weight. If you created a “hunger detector” and drove down all the roads in the world with it, and anybody who was hungry would get food shoved in their mouth, would there be peace? You would have more wars.

The coming and going of this breath is a gift. And absolutely, as long as the breath comes into you, all is well indeed. When you feel that simplicity, you can begin to hear the real rhythm of your life. You can appreciate what you have been given, and the story will be complete.

WHAT IS CONTENTMENT ?: ” Shri Krishna visited Sant Ravidas …

November 19, 2009

WHAT IS CONTENTMENT ?: ” Shri Krishna visited Sant Ravidas (who used to work as a cobbler) , shri krishna brought a piece of Paras stone (which can turn iron into gold) for Ravidas as a gift and kept it in a hole in the wall of ravidas’s hut……………………Krishna returned after 1 year and found Sant Ravidas still engage in cleaning leather………………so this proved that Sant Ravidas is an ideal example of “CONTENTMENT IS HAPPINESS”……also he had “Enlightenment”…….which is the only real gold : )………………….on the other hand if we had been given that stone, we would have immediately turned all iron things in our home into gold and then we would have sold all gold thus formed to buy more iron and turn them into gold….we would have kept doing this till our death.
